Today the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that fresh tomatoes now available are not associated with the latest outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul and are safe for consumption.
On June 7, the FDA issued a warning after identifying a possible link between certain red tomatoes, jalapeno and serrano peppers and the outbreak. The FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still advise those in “high risk populations” – elderly, infants and those with impaired immune systems – to avoid raw jalapeno and serrano peppers.
The CDC reports that 1,220 people have been infected with the same type of Salmonella Saintpaul in 42 states, the District of Columbia and Canada.
