Over the course of four hours Friday night, the Harrisonburg Police Department, in conjunction with the Rockingham County Sheriffs Office, conducted two separate safety check points in the city. (View a full gallery here)

Shortly after 7 p.m., officers set up at Hawkins Street and Norwood Street, battling frequent rain. At 9 p.m., the operation moved to University Boulevard and Driver Drive, near the campus of James Madison University.
Dozens of citations were issued and cars impounded, in addition to several arrests.
According to police, the check points are intended to remind drivers to remain “smart, safe and sober.”
