Thousands of students and parents filled the campus of James Madison University Saturday for the Spring commencement ceremonies, pushing JMU’s all-time graduate count over 100,000 since it was founded on March 14, 1908.
This semester, approximately 2,696 undergraduate and 450 graduate students received their diplomas while another 270 undergraduate and 38 graduate students participated, but will officially graduate in August.

In honor of the centennial and the school’s colors of purple and gold, the participants wore purple robes instead of the traditional black.
At the university’s main ceremony, senior Sarah Roquemore of Midlothian was the student speaker this year.
Thomas A. Dingledine addressed the graduates as commencement speaker. Dingledine, a businessman and entrepreneur, has been involved with the university for years and many of his family members have been connected with the school since its beginning.
He spoke on topics ranging from the history of the university to the importance of current volunteerism and contributions to JMU. “All of us have a responsibility beyond ourselves,” he said.

A graduating senior waves to the audience Saturday in Bridgeforth Stadium.

Graduating senior Kristen Darby scans the audience for a familiar face.

Following the conclusion of the commencement ceremony for the College of Arts & Letters, students toss their caps in front of Wilson Hall.
Great photos. I knew you’d have some up on the site; I imagined you’d have that camera with you, hanging around your purple robe! Congratulations on your achievements. Well done.
Evan,
I was the guy next to Kristen who told you that I read your blog.
Great shots.
PS – Way to cut half my face out. JK – the composition is good.
Congrats, man.
Thanks, guys. Much appreciated.
