Saturday morning the Rocktown Trails at Hillandale Park officially opened to the public in Harrisonburg. Dozens of community members came out for a morning run and a group ride.

The Rocktown Trails began construction in January of 2007 and are a joint project between the City of Harrisonburg and the all-volunteer Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition.
Kyle Lawrence, event coordinator for the grand opening, said the trails are intended for all community members to enjoy. The multi-purpose trails are available for bicycling, hiking, walking and running.
In a press release, Coalition President Thomas Jenkins said, “We hope this is just the start of more in town recreational trail experiences.”

Ribbon cutting is performed by Lee Foerster, director of Harrisonburg Department of Parks and Recreation, Richard Edwards of SVBC, and Councilman Charles Chenault.

Cody Gray of Harrisonburg, 18, lifts a wheel on his specialized P-3 Saturday on the Rocktown pumptrack. Gray has been riding for 8 years. and also competes in BMX events.
Looks like Charles and I have some bike riding to do to better improve our health. Drop me a line Charles and we’ll meet one day…

Guess I better get out there too! I just bought a bike and realized that you actually can forget how to ride! Not to mention I’m REALLY out of shape!
